Female Athletes and ACL Tears - Exercise Considerations

Female and male athletes have all of the same demands placed on them when it comes to their competitive sports. They all must perform at a high level which usually requires, speed, strength, and agility. As a varsity strength and conditioning coach for a women s ice hockey team my goal is to improve our teams performance in all of these areas. The principles I use to train our girls are the same basic principles I use with guys. After all athletes are athletes whether they are men or women. Now with that said there are a few considerations to be made for women that we do not have to account for with men.

Older Women Must Exercise Every Day

Can you explain why a study from The University of Sherbrooke in Canada showed that exercising three times a week improved insulin sensitivity in younger women but not in older women? Leading Cause of Death in Women Prevented with Exercise

Many research papers show that middle-aged and older women who are physically active are far less likely to suffer from heart attacks, the leading cause of death in women in America today. However, there has been very little research on the effects of physical activity during young adulthood on exercise patterns during middle and later age, and whether they influence heart attack risk in later life.
